What is EMDR therapy?

EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. We know, it's a mouthful. But the idea behind it is actually quite intuitive once you understand how trauma affects the brain.

When something deeply distressing happens to us, the brain can struggle to process that experience the way it normally would. Instead of filing it away as a memory of the past, it gets stored in a way that keeps it feeling raw and present, almost as if it's still happening. This is why trauma survivors often find themselves flooded by memories, physical sensations, or overwhelming emotions that seem to come out of nowhere.

EMDR helps the brain do what it couldn't do on its own: fully process and integrate those stuck experiences. Using guided eye movements or other gentle forms of bilateral stimulation like tapping or sound, EMDR allows distressing memories to be reprocessed so they lose their emotional charge. The memory doesn't disappear, but it stops feeling like an open wound and starts feeling more like something that happened in the past.

"I was skeptical at first, it sounded almost too simple. But after a few sessions, I noticed that the memories I'd been carrying for years just didn't feel as heavy anymore." A sentiment we hear often from clients who've experienced EMDR.

Is EMDR actually evidence-based?

Yes, and we think that's worth saying clearly, because EMDR can sound a little unusual if you haven't come across it before. It is recognized as an effective, evidence-based treatment by the World Health Organization (WHO), Health Canada, the American Psychological Association, and numerous other international mental health bodies.

Decades of research have shown EMDR to be particularly effective for PTSD and trauma. In some studies it produces results comparable to or faster than other leading trauma therapies. It's not a fringe approach; it's one of the most well-studied trauma treatments available.

What can EMDR help with?

While EMDR is best known for trauma and PTSD, it has a much wider range of applications. Our team uses EMDR to support clients working through:

🧠

Trauma & PTSD

Single-incident trauma, complex trauma, childhood experiences, accidents, and abuse.

😰

Anxiety & Panic

Generalized anxiety, panic attacks, social anxiety, and fear responses.

🌧️

Depression

Especially depression rooted in past experiences or negative core beliefs.

πŸ’”

Grief & Loss

Processing complicated grief, sudden loss, or bereavement that feels stuck.

πŸͺž

Low Self-Esteem

Deeply held negative beliefs about yourself that formed from past experiences.

😨

Phobias & Fears

Specific phobias, fear of medical procedures, performance anxiety, and more.

What does an EMDR session look like?

EMDR looks a little different from traditional talk therapy, so it helps to know what to expect going in. Sessions are structured, but your therapist will always move at a pace that feels safe for you. Here's how the process typically unfolds:

1

History and preparation

Before any processing begins, your therapist will take time to understand your history, identify what you'd like to work on, and make sure you have solid coping tools in place. This stage can take several sessions and that's completely normal. There's no rushing.

2

Identifying the target

Together, you'll identify a specific memory or experience to work with, along with the thoughts, emotions, and body sensations connected to it. You'll also identify a positive belief you'd like to feel about yourself instead.

3

Bilateral stimulation

Your therapist will guide you through sets of eye movements, or tapping, or sound while you hold the distressing memory in mind. You don't need to talk through the details. You simply notice what comes up and let your brain do the work.

4

Reprocessing and integration

Over time, the emotional intensity attached to the memory reduces, and the positive belief you identified starts to feel more true. Most clients describe the memory feeling more distant, like it belongs to the past rather than the present.

5

Closing and grounding

Every session ends with grounding and stabilization. Your therapist will make sure you feel settled and safe before you leave. EMDR is careful and contained work.

How many sessions will I need?

This is one of the most common questions we get, and the honest answer is: it depends. For a single, clearly defined traumatic event, many people notice significant relief within 6 to 12 sessions. For complex or long-standing trauma, especially experiences that began in childhood, the process tends to take longer, and that's completely okay.

What we can say is that EMDR often produces meaningful results more quickly than people expect. Many clients who have tried other forms of therapy without feeling like things shifted find that EMDR reaches the experiences that words alone couldn't quite get to.

EMDR for teens and young people in Calgary

Trauma doesn't only happen to adults, and it doesn't always look like what people expect. For teenagers and young people, distressing experiences like bullying, family conflict, loss, accidents, or other difficult events can shape how they see themselves and the world in ways that are hard to shake.

EMDR can be adapted beautifully for younger clients. Our team works with teens and youth using age-appropriate approaches that feel manageable, not clinical. If your young person is struggling with anxiety, nightmares, avoidance, or emotional reactivity that doesn't seem to respond to other approaches, EMDR may be worth exploring.

Do I have to talk about my trauma in detail?

This is something that holds a lot of people back from seeking trauma therapy, and it's a completely understandable concern. The good news is that EMDR doesn't require you to narrate your experiences in detail. You hold the memory in mind while your brain processes it, but you are never asked to relive or recount your trauma blow by blow.

Many clients find this to be one of EMDR's most welcome qualities. You can experience real healing without having to put words to things that may feel impossible to describe.

You don't have to have the "right words" for what happened to you. EMDR works at a level beneath language, which is exactly where trauma often lives.

Frequently asked questions about EMDR

What does EMDR stand for?

EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. It's a structured therapy that uses bilateral stimulation, most often guided eye movements, to help the brain process distressing memories and experiences.

Is EMDR evidence-based?

Yes. EMDR is recognized by the World Health Organization, Health Canada, and the American Psychological Association as an effective, evidence-based treatment, particularly for trauma and PTSD. It has been extensively researched since the late 1980s.

What does EMDR treat?

EMDR is best known for treating PTSD and trauma, but it's also effective for anxiety, panic, depression, grief, phobias, low self-esteem, and negative core beliefs rooted in past experiences.

Do I have to talk about my trauma in detail?

No, and this surprises many people. EMDR does not require you to narrate or relive your experiences in detail. You hold the memory in mind while your therapist guides you through bilateral stimulation, but there is no expectation to recount what happened step by step.

How many sessions will EMDR take?

It varies. For a single traumatic event, many people see significant improvement in 6 to 12 sessions. Complex or long-standing trauma typically takes longer. Your therapist will work with you to set realistic expectations from the start.

Is EMDR available for teens and children in Calgary?

Yes. Our team works with teens and youth using EMDR approaches that are thoughtfully adapted for younger clients. If you're unsure whether EMDR is right for your child or teenager, we're happy to talk it through during a free consultation.
