What is neurodivergent affirming therapy?

For a long time, therapy for ADHD and Autism focused on fixing behaviors. The goal was often to help people blend in or act more neurotypical. Affirming therapy takes the opposite approach. We view neurodivergence as a natural difference in how your brain processes information, sensory input, and emotions.

Being neurodivergent in a world designed for neurotypical people is exhausting. It often leads to masking, which is the constant effort to hide your traits to fit in. Over time, this causes deep burnout, anxiety, and a lost sense of self. Our goal is to help you peel back those layers and find ways to thrive as you are.

"You do not need to be fixed. You need to be understood, accommodated, and supported in a way that respects how your brain naturally functions."

Who is this therapy for?

Our affirming approach is designed for adults and adolescents who identify as neurodivergent. This includes those with formal diagnoses and those who are self-identified. We commonly work with:

  • ADHDers: Managing rejection sensitivity, impulsivity, and interest-based nervous systems.
  • Autistic Individuals: Navigating sensory processing, social communication, and deep interests.
  • AuDHD: Balancing the often conflicting needs of having both Autism and ADHD traits.
  • Sensory Processing: Understanding and accommodating your unique sensory profile.

The experience at Northwest Psychology

Our NW Calgary office is a place where you do not have to apologize for being you. We prioritize your comfort, whether that means using fidget tools during sessions, adjusting the lighting, or taking breaks when you need them. We understand that traditional talk therapy can sometimes feel demanding or "too much," so we adapt our style to match your communication needs.

We believe that the best expert on your experience is you. We are here to provide the tools and psychological support to help you live a life that feels authentic and manageable.

Common Questions

Do I need an official diagnosis to start therapy?

No. We welcome self-identified neurodivergent individuals. Many adults realize they are neurodivergent later in life, and the cost or barriers to formal testing can be high. We start where you are.

Will this help with my work or school life?

Yes. A major part of affirming therapy is identifying where your environment is clashing with your brain. We work on practical accommodations and strategies that can make your daily tasks feel less overwhelming.

How is this different from behavioral therapy?

Behavioral therapy often asks you to change your traits to make others more comfortable. Affirming therapy asks how the environment or your habits can change to make YOU more comfortable and functional.
