What is SPACE Treatment?

SPACE stands for Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions. It is an evidence based treatment developed by Dr. Eli Lebowitz at the Yale Child Study Center. While most childhood therapies focus on the child directly, SPACE takes a different path: the parents attend the sessions, not the child.

This program works by helping you, as a parent, understand the family patterns that unintentionally keep anxiety going. When parents shift their responses, children shift too. SPACE is also an excellent complement to child therapy for parents who feel lost in knowing how to support their child. It provides a clear roadmap and practical strategies to use at home.

"We had tried everything. Our son was not ready for his own therapy. SPACE gave us a way to move forward that actually worked, and we were the ones learning the tools."

How we address accommodation

At the center of SPACE is the concept of accommodation. These are the ways parents naturally adjust their behavior to help an anxious child avoid distress. While these actions come from a place of love, they can accidentally send the message that the child cannot handle the situation on their own. Common accommodations include:

  • Staying with your child until they fall asleep because bedtime causes worry
  • Speaking on your child's behalf in social situations they find overwhelming
  • Avoiding certain places or people to prevent your child from feeling upset
  • Reassuring your child repeatedly that nothing bad will happen
  • Allowing your child to skip school or activities to avoid distress

SPACE does not ask you to stop being supportive. Instead, it helps you find a way to be warm and validating while also expressing confidence in your child's ability to cope.

SPACE for ARFID

Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID) can leave parents feeling incredibly helpless. Watching your child struggle with food is exhausting, and it is natural to want to do anything to ensure they are nourished. Often, this leads to parents tiptoeing around mealtimes to ease their child's stress.

SPACE for ARFID provides a clear path forward. It helps you shift away from the pressure and power struggles that often surround eating. Because food restriction can fluctuate throughout a child's life, this treatment gives you a permanent set of strategies. You will have a plan you can continue to use in the future, regardless of how your child's eating habits change over time.

This approach isn't about forcing a child to eat. It is about giving parents a reliable toolkit to reduce the anxiety around the family table.

Is SPACE right for your family?

You might consider SPACE if your child is struggling with any of the following:

  • Eats only a small number of safe foods and refuses most others
  • Has strong reactions to textures, smells, or colors of food
  • Has a fear of choking, gagging, or being sick when eating
  • Refuses to attend their own therapy related to anxiety or eating
  • Is not ready to engage meaningfully with a therapist themselves

What to expect in sessions

SPACE is a structured treatment that typically runs for about 12 sessions. These sessions are for you, the parent or caregiver. Your therapist will help you map out the areas where anxiety is most present and build a concrete plan to reduce accommodation while maintaining a close, supportive relationship with your child.

Does my child need to be involved?

No. This is the most distinctive part of SPACE. Only the parents attend. This makes it an ideal option for children who are reluctant to engage in their own therapy.

Is this evidence based?

Yes. Randomized controlled trials have shown SPACE to be as effective as individual CBT for childhood anxiety. It is a highly respected, science-based approach.

Can we do this if our child is already in therapy?

Absolutely. SPACE is a wonderful complement to individual therapy. It ensures that the work being done in the therapy room is supported by the environment at home.

You are doing so much already. Let us help.
